One thing I have learned through years of trial and error is "why make a substitute for something when the real thing is so accessable?"  As a music teacher can't you ask the school to allow you to borrow a mic stand?

Another thing I should learn is to read all the posting, I didn't see you were looking for a '40's style mic.  I have seen very convincing mics made from a circular a cross stitch hoop, four springs and a circle of wood in the center.  Attach the springs to hoop and the circle of wood, paint the whole thing black and presto instant old time mic.

A "forties" style mic would probably be an RCA44 (the kind you always saw Bing Crosby and Bob Hope use) or the RCA77 (it looks like a very large Tylenol capsule in a "U" shaped metal stand).  These are the two "de-facto" mics of the forties era of stage and broadcasting.  They are collector's items and as a result, they're quite expensive.  Even the replicas made by AEA are outrageously expensive.  I have seen the RCA77 "imitated," using small plastic display domes attached to either end of a soft drink can (they are very close to the same diameter) and then covered with contact paper that had a grill hole pattern on it.  They were suspended in a "U" shaped metal cradle that was attached to the mic stand.  From any distance at all, they looked convincing enough to pass the audience's notice.

These mics are difficult to fake, I know, due to their odd shapes.  I have been pondering how to effectively come up with a decent replica for some time now.  Please let us all know what you finally do to resolve your problem, and GOOD LUCK!

Ok,  let me see if I understand.  hoop with springs from hoop going over a round piece of wood that fits in the middle?  I guess I'm confused as to how the springs attach in the center and how the center pole is attached.  I'm sorry,  I'm so new at this, it takes me awhile Confused

I am using all of my stands for the real mics.  They are also pretty heavy and I have choreography planned for the "fake" ones.

I have a web page with a few examples of mics and studios that might be appropriate for you. There is even a picture of me using a RCA 77DX in AFVN radio station in Vietnam (1969).
I own a mic very similar to the one in this picture
