bullet Topic: Making me look fat
    Posted: 8/05/08 at 8:04pm
Hey everyone,

I have been cast in the role of Delightful Turpin in Dearly Departed. The play is showing in October and as I'm sure many of you know, Delightful is supposed to be a big girl.

I am not a big girl therefore I will be donning a fat suit for the role. My issue is that although my face is very round, it's small.

Does anyone have any suggestions on how I can make my face look bigger so that it's more in proportion with the rest of my body?

Please keep in mind that I am allergic to latex when making the suggestions.

Thanks so much!!

Fat suit fine, but without three dimensional makeup (namely prosthetics of some kind) it'll never work.  Straight stage makeup works in ONE direction only - meaning that straight on you can be made to look fat, but turn either right or left and the illusion of 3 dimensions is lost.

Since you're allergic to latex, the only other prosthetic alternative you have is silicone gel-filled appliances.  That process is highly specialized, quite expensive but can accomplish incredible results.  The product is made translucent so natural skin tones can show through, it can be flesh colored and made to look, feel and move like real skin.  It's HOT to wear, NOT uncomfortable though, but the results can be stunningly good.  It can be applied with silicone adhesives (actually the silicone product itself is used as the adhesive - equal parts A and B) and will easily stay on for hours.  Removal is EASY - simply catch an edge and gently pull off.  Leaves no adhesive residue to clean up and only clean up is whatever makeup used to blend edges.  But again, this is a highly specialized process that only qualified makeup artists can accomplish.  And doing a FAT makeup without prosthetics especially if the difference is drastically different with the weight, well it just won't work as far as I'm concerned.  But this is one of two alternatives.  The OTHER alternative is using gelatin prosthetic appliances.  The problem with gelatin is that it's susceptible to heat, sweat and other atmospheric conditions and it breaks down easily if proper preparation is not done.  It requires a fairly harsh adhesive to make it stay on (works well enough though with Spirit Gum) but would be better if you used a medical grade prosthetic adhesive.  THEN removal is much more tedious and involved.

Good luck - keep us informed.

My "Delightful" wasn't fat, either.  We opted for costuming her in Goth.  She was darling!  And she also drank coke, ate chips, M&Ms and corn dogs, and burped very nicely, too.  But goth was the way to go for us.

As a "fat" woman, I can tell you that not all fat people have fat faces.  I am quite large (and have been larger!), but I have a "normal", heart-shaped fave.
There's a little bit of diva in all of us. Some just have a larger helping than others.

In my experience (having been involved in two productions), Delightful's physical appearance is far less inmportant than her attitude. The best Delightful I've ever seen was consrtantly on the lookout for more chow, to the extent of licking the salt out of empty potato chip bags, eyeing other people's corn dogs, swilling down lbottles of Mountain Dew, etc. It takes great acting chops (and a strong stomach) to do her justice. Work on this aspect of her, and you'll have 'em rolling in the aisles!
