Ok i know lots of you dis this show but.. we are doing it anyway and need some suggestions for various costumes. We are a community theater with a fairly limited budget, but lots of talented sewers.(the sewing machine type, not the other one), and are even having a hard time finding where to rent anything. We can go just sort of crazy and off the cuff for most everyone, but what about the WHOS? And are pretty thin Horton? Any ideas out there/

My CT did the Who's in bright green, yellow, pink, and orange. Then put striped socks on every actor as well as a wig in one of those colors. They were wonderful and the wigs made them switch into a new character in a snap. GOOD LUCK! I loved the show!

The Sioux City CT did the show last summer. All the Who's were dressed in bright yellow. The children were in yellow T's and shorts, the Mayor in a bright yellow suit and a yellow bowler.
For Horton, they simply put him in a grey vest and grey pants. |

We used mismatched stripes and polka-dots and other bright colors with crazy hairdos for the WHos. For Horton, we dyed some white bib overalls gray, put a gray long-sleeved shirt under them and used a backwards gray baseball cap with ears. He also wore black Converse high tops. It worked great. The audience seems to be able to use its imagination on Seuss costuming!
BTW, this is one of my favorite shows that we've done!

here are some pics from my school's production.
the who's costumes were very authentic to seuss' illustrations.
if you look at most of his books the who's do not have the obnoxiously bright colors that many productions use.
they are more muted, yet still colorful.
i think are hairstyles also looked great.

This was one of the fave shows our CT did. Our Whos were also all in yellow, some with silly hats. The mayor had yellow, white & green checked "golf type" pants and a yellow blazer. Horton was in gray pants & gray button up shirt. We used many different color boas for the bird girls and they all wore leotards & stockings that matched the color of their boa. And we made tails for each from the boas as well. We re-created houses (painted on tri-actoids) from Dr. Seuss books, like the Grinch. It was so much fun to create and turned out to be a favorite to everyone involved! Good luck with it!

We dressed all of our Whos in various forms of Black and White - stripes, polkadots, checks, etc. Each one had something trimmed in yellow as well. Mr. and Mrs. Mayor wore matching plaid business suits. Each Who also did the Who Hair complete with yellow puff balls, ribbons, etc. Our Hornton simply wore a grey shirt and pants.
One thing that we did was ask each cast member to buy a pair of Chuck Taylors to match their costume - Who's bought yellow, Horton bought gray, Cat bought red, etc. The cast was very willing to do this and we had a ton of comments about the impact it made from the audience. We worked with a local shoe store and they gave us a discount and helped us special order anything we needed.
It's such a fun show and I love the fact that the creativity factor is wide open for interpretation.
Enjoy!
