I work for a twice daily newspaper in a city of 100 thousand. We do theare reviews for an area with nine functioning community theater programs and my editor wants to know how well we compare with cities of similar size. Do we have more, less or about average outlets for local theater? Any help would be appreciated/

9? I think we only have 10 or 11 regularly functioning groups in the entire state (Delaware, pop. about 750,000). There are a few others who are dormant or only appear occasionally, but that's it. We also only have two daily papers but neither do reviews of shows in the southern two counties... they used to, but no longer. We can only count on the local weekly for a review of our stuff... pretty sad for a state capitol, isn't it?

Sorry Bill!
I don?t think our City demographics would help you. Because our Capital City [Perth] makes up 1.4 million of the total population of 2 million of the state. In what is arguably the largest state in the world [West Australia.] covering at least a third of the 1 million square miles of the Australian continent. However the country City of Bunbury. Which is in the south west of the state. Would has a simular population- within a 100 mile radius of that City. They have a pro theatre venue of 800 seats & 3 community theatre groups, with a further 8 groups continually functioning with in the region. These cover a number of towns of upto a thousand people, with at least one theatre group in each. The region also boasts having the oldest longest continually functioning amateur theatre in Australia [Bridgetown Repertory club] In the state we have more than 50 community theatre groups. Perth has about 30 of these & there are a further 20 in the country regions of the state. however you would need more than a cut lunch & a waterbag to reach most of them. Of the Perth groups only about 15 are continually active. For what IT is worth? I hope IT helps you! |

I live on an island in Puget Sound. We have a population of 3,500 in the winter and about 5,000 in the summer. We support two theater groups. The "big" theater has a 200+ seat theater and a 60 seat black box. They do four or five shows a year plus one or two kids productions. They also have dozens of non theatrical events - dance music, etc. The "small" theater has a 66 seat theater and does two or three full productions and six to eight readers theater/radio shows a year. They also run several training programs a year. Both run about 3/4 full. We have one weekly newspaper (no radio or TV) that does a good job of covering the theater. Besides the usual press release, the paper gives our two theaters a teaser with pictures the week before an opening, half of the front page of the second section for a big spread on full productions the week of opening, and a review the week after opening. Word of mouth is still the biggest mass media for local productions.
