bullet Topic: smoking chicken
    Posted: 6/24/08 at 11:50am
I am doing props for Felix and oscar (The new odd couple) and it calls for a burning cooked chicken. My first thought is dry ice but has anyone used those magician's smoke bombs? How much smolke do they give off and is it a bit more volitile than dry ice which just seems to hover. I was thinking of using a personal fan (battery operated) in with the chicken to move the dry ice steam if I go that route. The chicken will be papier mache.  Any thoughts? Thanks!

I would suggest the dry ice method.  It's much less noxious than the smoke.  Remember the warmer the water for the dry ice, the more fog you get.  The little fan inside the bird sounds like a dead on fantastic idea.

The only hiccup with dry ice, well no there is a few, is it finds the lowest level & hugs the deck. Use a smoke machine pipe it to the oven, it can also do it on cue.
Or grab an old coffee machine with a hot plate or a warmer keep hot plate. Set it up in the oven & just buy some smoke machine fluid. Put it in a tin dish, even an old Ali Bean can .
Switch it on & crack the fluid oil, you will have heaps of smoke, when the oven door is open.

Unfortunately there is no oven. The actor carries in the chicken in a pan thus I can't have anything that plugs in.

If you build your papier mache chicken around a metal container (ie: a coffee can, or juice can) then you can fill it with warm water and plop the dry ice inside it just before the character enters.

Likewise, a metal can should provide protection if you wish to go the smoke bomb route, or even use the smoking wood chips that add flavor to your outdoor barbecue.

If your show is after July 4, you should be able to get a variety of items that could create the smoke effect.
