I work with a group that has just formed and we have had much luck with the local newspapers. Ask them to put your info under "community calendar" or something like that, this is free and has a great distribution. Cable access stations have "community bullitin boards" and they will post for free too, Also if you have a local radio ststion, call and see if they will announce for you on air. We have used that too and it has proven a great way to get people for auditions and to just get the word out about our group. Good luck! Linda K

We have tried various types of publicity, based mainly upon what production we are doing. We run small ads in the local daily newspaper and the weekly "pennysaver" paper. We have done posters in supermarkets, etc. but limit those now to areas where we know we are drawing our audience from - senior centers, the county courthouse, etc. We have used radio in conjunction with ticket giveaways to a certain degree of success. Our Winter Carnival related dinner theater publicity is normally paid for by the host carnival committee and/or restaurant as part of the contractual obligation. But there is still nothing better than word of mouth!

We found out (the hard way) that our newspaper will not do continuing publicity for us (even calendar) unless we advertise. We have an occasional newsletter that goes out by e-mail and snail mail that does well.

We were having trouble early on in our existence (we are still infants, having had our first organizational meeting in Mar'00 and just this weekend staged our first production.) We are in a small town, and it seems that this is the mentality--that the newspaper doesn't much want to do your advertising for you for free. Finally we found that we had one member who was willing to sit down with the publisher and talk about our philosophy, about what we want to be to the community and how they could help us....and it worked alot better after that. She was able to get something in the paper in the way of press releases almost every week. The last three weeks before the show opened we had really nice, front page articles, two of them with photos. If you can get that person on your side, and it may take some kind of sweet talking, or buying a small ad or having them do some printing for you, if they do that, it will be worth it. Surprisingly, the daily paper from a much larger community was much more interested in us--even called and interviewed us after someone made several attempts at contacting them, and letting them know that we had something interesting going on.
