We need snow for our Snowflake sscene in Nutcracker. Please advise on the best method of crating a light snowfall across the front of stage. Am concerned about covering a 40' span.

Drop in a black scrim & use rotating gobo's with a snow break up paten.
Only have wash lighting US of the scrim, making the scrim see thru & the snow gobo's visable on the DS side of the scrim.
Thus no flakes on the stage to slide on while dancing & no mess to strike.

Use confetti that’s what I have seen used for the nutcracker. I have also used it for snow in another show

I second Gaffa's suggestion.  We used a gobo for our snow scene in Honk and it looked great.

Here is one suggestion for confetti drop or snow drop.

For dance, I agree its best to not have anything on stage to slip on.  However, if you feel that you have to do confetti, its classically done with a snow blanket/bag.

You take canvas...in your case maybe 40' x whatever width the canvas is.  So you have a 40' long rectangle.  Take two small strips of wood/pipe and run them lengthwise (40') and place an attachment point on each end of the wood.  Cut slots on one side of the canvas blanket or bag.  Sling the blanket/bag between two closely hung battons.  Now the 'snow' goes in the bottom of the sling formed.  When it's time to 'snow', you lower the batton on the slotted side and a small amount of the snow falls out.

In the picture below the small circles are attachment points.  You can use confetti, soap flakes ( I think), or paper holes from a hole punch, sparkly pieces.  But they will flutter and get underfoot even if the blanket is far upstage or downstage.
