Our theatre group has decided to sell yearly memberships at 10 dollars per individual. Since we are just starting out, we wanted to pick your brains and ask what some of you are giving your members for *your* yearly charge. Thanks in advance for your responses.

We are not a membership organization but here are a couple of ideas I have picked up along the way:
These seem to be done almost everywhere: Reduced cost tickets, preferred assigned seating, opportunity to purchase tickets ahead of non members. These are things we do for everyone but could be tailored for members: Opening night or closing night receptions with the cast and crew after the show (these are very popular) - we do not charge for the reception (champagne and sparkling cider) but we accept donations - champagne is cheap and we always make out ok financially. We also have a one ticket rule - you can see the program more than once for the price of just one ticket - we are hardly ever sold out and this mostly benefits family members who come often. We have been able to get two playwrights (who live in the region) to come to the closing performance of their shows and had receptions for them afterwards - also very popular. We have been talking about season passes but have not done anything about it - our season is pretty flexible. We have a monthly newsletter about the theater in our area - not just our group. We send it to anyone who wants it by e-mail but only to donors (and those active in the theater) by snail mail. Our local membership theater occasionally has opening night dinner before the show for members but this is more of a fundraiser. We have been talking to other local 501(c)(3) organizations to set up an information table in the lobby before the performance. This happened by accident a couple of years ago when we were renting the theater - a double booking of the lobby area - but it turned out very nice - our attendees found out about their organization and had something to do waiting for our doors to open. We have also talked to some local organizations about sharing a performance - we would give them a portion of the proceeds in return for them promoting the show to their constituencies. For example, the Animal Protection Society is raising funds. We would title a specific performance as a fund raiser for them. We will try this soon. |
