bullet Topic: Musical for middle school

First, thanks for this fantastic resource. I've learned a lot just by reading your site.
I'm an experienced performer and neophyte director looking for suggestions for musicals for grades 6-8. The kids want to do a "real" musical, rather than something homemade. We have excellent resources in terms of orchestra and choral music at the school, and I've started sorting out the possibilities regarding appropriateness, etc. What I'm wondering about is whether you can suggest any relatively "easy" shows to begin with... and which are the super tough ones to avoid. I'm also wondering whether some musicals are much more expensive (as to royalties, as well as otherwise) to put on than others.
Any advice from the pros gratefully appreciated. I've heard of the "Junior" Broadway musicals... has anyone done them?

Thanks!

Yes, we have done the junior versions of Broadway shows and are planning another one for our kids this summer. Both Fiddler on the Roof and Birdie! (version of Bye, Bye Birdie for young actors) have been very successful for us, and the kids love them. Good luck!

Try checking out the Drama Book Shop. It's in Manhattan but their website is very informative. They also have a "bestsellers" category which has suggestions. They are also very helpful and quick to respond to any emails. Good luck.

The MTI catalog has a separate section for junior musicals. I have never tried any of them but it might meet your needs. You can call them to get the catalog or try their web site (www.mtishows.com).

We just finished doing "Once on This Island"- junior version
with CD soundtrack and were very happy with the results. Its
a good show which no one was really familiar with but everyone enjoyed. We've also done their "Annie". Working off a CD saves
orch. costs, and maintains consistancy for the music.

Try "Annie" or "Oliver" because there are adult AND child-like roles for the children to try.
