Does anyone have any data or opinions on what percentage of funding is ideal for a community theater by category? We are almost completely dependent on ticket sales. Any experiences on how much of your revenue comes from ticket sales vs other sources of revenue like grants? Also, what percentage of your revenue do you spend on marketing and interested in how many season tickets you have for how big a theater as we have had limited success in selling season tix. Thanks!

We are a small group with no home - we do our shows at various venues in our area. We do not have any members as such. Our schedule is very flexible so we don't know how many shows we will do. Here is 2000 actual and our 2001 budget: (Revenue - expenses are another story).
2001 2000 Full Productions $3,500 $ 922 Readers Theater Prod 2,000 1,876 Training 3,500 3,380 Donations 500 877 Grants 2,000 0 Total 11,500 7,055 We expect to make enough money to purchase $2,500 worth of sound equipment and break even on a cash flow basis. Each production pays for its own marketing. I can dig that out if you need it. Usually $20 or $30 for each readers theater and twice that for each full production. This does not include our newsletter which is primarily distributed by e-mail but we mail about 50 to 100 copies in addition to the e-mail. |

the goal of any theatre is that no more than 40% of your total revenue should come from ticket sales. the rest should come from donation - be it corporate sponsorship or membership, etc.
hope this helps. |
