bullet Topic: problems selecting a play
    Posted: 4/08/03 at 10:01pm
I'm a high school senior and last summer I directed our summer community theatre here. Anyway, I'm having problems selecting a play. Basically, all of our actors are under 20. And we have about 5 males, with maybe one who can play a lead, and about 25-30 females (I'm not kidding.) We're a small community, and we have very few people capable of playing a really strong lead role (at least in my opinion). The play last summer was an ensemble cast, with a female starring, but she's gone to college now. So anyway, to get to the point, that's my situation, and I was wondering if anyone had any suggestions for plays that we could do? Right now I'm essentially deciding between Tennesee William's "Summer and Smoke" and Oscar Wilde's "The Importance of Being Earnest." I would double-cast males and switch roles that aren't gender specific to females for both. Do you think that it's plausible for either of these productions to be done, or can anyone suggest something that would work better, on a very limited budget? I'm open to suggestions for dramas or comedies of any sort, so long as they're fairly tame. Thanks in advance to anyone who just takes the time to read this.

How about Steel Magnolias. No guys, but plenty of room for women to shine.

Try the Dining Room by Gurney - flexible cast of six, but one theater company did it for one of their anniversary's and had a cast of fifty!

A show by Agatha Christie might be worth your while. Try The Mouse Trap, or Ten Little Indians, maybe The Unexpected Guest
